Bible Full Armor Of God – Did you know the devil is real? The Bible repeatedly describes the devil as our enemy. It began in the Garden of Eden when Satan tried to make Eve offend God by eating the forbidden fruit. In the Old Testament book of Zechariah, the author describes the devil accusing someone of being unclean and sinful and therefore unfit to be saved and cleansed. In the New Testament, the devil is described as a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Satan is real and threatens us with spiritual warfare. We are at war. Fortunately, God has given us the tools to arm ourselves and prepare for this battle against the devil.

Put on the whole armor of God and you will be able to withstand the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11 NKJV)

The author goes on to talk about the nature of our war against the devil, a spiritual war. He then teaches us what the armor of God is and how it can help us.

The author tells us that as warriors we must gird our loins with truth. When you think of all the armor a soldier has, you don’t usually think of belts. However, the author mentions this tool first. The belt of Roman armor was important because it held the scabbard, and therefore the sword. Without a belt, you most likely don’t have a sword. In addition, leather straps attach to the waist to help protect the thighs while allowing the freedom to maneuver quickly and easily in hand-to-hand combat. One of the most amazing things around us is the truth. We need our sword (the Word) for defense when we fight the devil. The truth is found in God’s Word. We can use the truth to help us outflank the enemy quickly and easily while protecting our base.

A physical breastplate covers the body and protects vital organs from injury. Righteousness helps protect us from Satan’s potentially deadly spiritual blows. The righteous are those who are justified. No one is righteous alone, our righteousness is a gift from God. It is this righteousness that is vital to deliverance from death.

Soldiers need good shoes when going to the battlefield. Imagine a soldier in full armor. He has his sword, his shield, his helmet, his breastplate and his belt…but his legs are completely bare. It’s weird and dangerous. With covered legs, you are not only protected from debris, but also provide peace of mind for the soldiers. In short, the right footwear allows a soldier to walk freely and fearlessly while engaged in combat. The gospel of peace here is the same as that mentioned in the New Testament. The good news of Jesus Christ’s death, burial and resurrection saves us and reconciles us to God. As soldiers of the cross, our Master entrusts us with the responsibility of evangelization. As we proclaim the good news of God’s Kingdom, we spread His ways of peace throughout the world. With the shoes on, we are ready to act and share the good news with others.

So far, Paul’s descriptions of the armor of God have been limited to the things we carry. We wear belts, breastplates, and shoes that basically hold us up. Shields are different. The author tells us that a shield is something we must hold up to protect ourselves. Shields are very important in battle. Due to its size, the soldiers were greatly protected from enemies. Due to its slight tilt, it is able to deflect attacks without diverting the full force of the attack to the shield wielder. It is also capable of deflecting more vicious blows that can be fatal. In our war against Satan, our faith is our defense tool. Shields protect, just as our faith protects us from spiritual attacks. The shield deflects Satan’s fierce arrows of doubt, anxiety, and temptation. Faith is a very important thing. Great faith can protect us and support us in battles, but with weak faith we can fail and die.

The helmet protects the head from enemy attacks. Roman helmets were protective, but also had a special ceremonial meaning, signifying rank and status. Salvation basically means to be saved or freed from something. Our sin is killing us and Satan knows it. During spiritual warfare, Satan will use any weapon at his disposal to cause us to sin. Jesus died for us so that we could be saved from sin. We can gain great hope and comfort by focusing on Christ’s incredible sacrifice to save us and the wonderful Kingdom that is the goal of our salvation. This hope acts like a helmet, protecting our minds from discouragement and despair in this world. We must always keep the hope of our salvation in mind to help us in this battle.

I don’t believe you can think of a soldier without thinking of him as a sword bearer. The sword is a weapon capable of both offense and defense, and so is the spirit. We can use it to defend against the attacks of those who try to mock God and His Word. We can use it positively to go out and teach. Instead of waiting for the evil forces to come upon us and let us defend them with words, we must take the initiative to fight, go out and fight, and proactively teach God’s word to others.

We have put on the armor of God to fight effectively against our enemy the devil. Without it we are helpless, but with it we are soldiers of the living God. Have you put on your armor yet? Are you ready to use it? Ready or not, your enemies are coming. We must hear the word of God and put on the whole armor of God. Welcome to never leave! For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against cosmic powers, against spiritual demons in the heavens, which rule this present darkness. – Ephesians 6:12

We may live on earth, but as believers, we also have one foot in the kingdom of God. The battle we face here has an eternal component, and you and I need to keep that in mind.

The joys and challenges of everyday life can easily distract us, but everything we do has eternal meaning. I’ve had times of great frustration in ministry, times when I’ve burned out, and the problems never seem to end. At that moment, I forgot that my real fight was not with people and problems, but deeply spiritual.
