Beginning with the book of Exodus in the Old Testament (Exodus), the tabernacle was the place where God lived among his people (Exodus 25-31). When their captivity ended, men named Ezra and Zerubbabel led a construction project to rebuild the temple (516 BC). This second temple existed until the time of Jesus’ ministry, but it was not as large as the first temple. However, centuries later, King Herod repaired and expanded it to earn the political favor of the Jews on a large and generous scale (19 BC). After several decades of Christ’s earthly ministry, the Roman Empire completely destroyed him (AD 70).
Although the third temple was never built, it will happen in the future during a period called the Tribulation. This will happen before the Antichrist appears on earth. He enters this temple to declare himself God (Matthew 24:15; 2 Thess. 2:4; See Dan. 9:24-27).
The prophet Ezekiel describes another future temple that will probably function during the millennial kingdom (Ezekiel 40). It will be a period of 1000 years between the 7 years. The tribulation period and the eternal state (in which there will be no temple, Revelation 21:22). This temple will be bigger and bigger than any previous temple.
If there is no temple today, then where is God’s house? Sometimes we mistake a church building for a temple. We call the building “the house of God” or the auditorium “mabara” (which means “holy place”). This is not a clear understanding.

It is interesting to observe how the New Testament describes Jesus’ earthly ministry as the “goodness” of God’s presence, and then describes believers as the permanent “temple” of God’s presence. Jesus’ earthly ministry was temporary; Christ came for a while, then returned to heaven.

However, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a constant and permanent condition. He never leaves or withdraws His presence. Therefore, the believer must not grieve the Holy Spirit with corrupt and evil words, deeds and behavior (Ephesians 4:30-31). If a believer continually sins, the Spirit cannot leave. Therefore, God must eventually destroy his temple (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).
Both Peter and Paul describe the universal church as God’s dwelling place (Ephesians 2:22; 1 Peter 2:5). In both cases, we are described as an ongoing building project that continues on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ and the apostolic ministry recorded in the New Testament.
This construction project does not apply to church buildings. It refers to all of us as believers who together form a spiritual house for God’s presence in the world. The king sent the prophet Nathan to him and said: “Behold, I live in a cedar house, and the ark of God’s covenant is under a tent.” This conflict troubled David. Why should the king’s house be a palace, but the house of God was only a tent?
First, Nathan urged David to fulfill his desire to build a temple for the Lord (1 Chronicles 17:2). But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan and changed their plans: “Go and tell my servant David: “Thus says the Lord: You will not build a house in which I will build a house” (verse 4) . ). God then emphasizes that throughout the long history of the tabernacle, He never rebuked Israel’s leaders for building a permanent temple (vv. 5-6). Instead of David building the temple, God chose to let David’s son oversee the work (verses 11–12).

1 Chronicles 22:8 sheds light on God’s decision not to allow David to build the temple: “You have shed much blood and fought many wars. God wanted a man of peace to build the temple, not a man of war. His house is to be “a house of prayer for all nations” (Isaiah 56:7).
Since David was forbidden to build the temple himself, he helped gather materials and prepare plans for the temple. He said to Solomon, “I have suffered greatly to give for the temple of God a hundred thousand talents of gold, a million talents of silver, too much bronze and iron for weight, wood and stone. And you can add to them. You have many workers: masons, woodcutters and carpenters, and those who work with all kinds of gold, silver, copper and iron – you have countless craftsmen. Now get to work, and the Lord is with you” (1 Chronicles 22:14-16).
During his reign, Solomon exactly followed this order and led Israel to the height of world power. David’s desire to build a house for the Lord was great, but God had other plans. An example for us is David’s response to the violation of God’s plan. When things don’t go as planned—when God closes the door—we must continue to praise the Lord and then move in a new direction. Instead of complaining about what we cannot do, we should do what we can and give praise to God. As a church leader, you’re always looking for the perfect verses to use in worship.
