The Whole Armor Of God
If you’ve ever been involved in ministry, either as a volunteer or for your job, you know – there are obstacles everywhere you turn. Your heart is to serve, but you find that many things in your ministry are difficult and your patience is a little less than you thought. The twists and turns turn out to be harder than you think.
I see this all the time, in my work and listening to others in ministry. The path can be very difficult.
Most of the time challenges come in the form of people. Conflict and grievances are a constant when you are in leadership. You may feel depressed, upset.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against earthly powers in this present darkness, against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:12
Put On The Full Armor
We may live on earth, but as believers, we also have one foot in God’s heavenly kingdom. There is an eternal component to the battles we face here that you and I must keep in mind.
Be restrained. do it Your enemy Satan prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking to devour someone. 1 Peter 5:8
It’s easy to get distracted by the joys and challenges of our daily lives, but everything we do also has eternal significance. I have experienced times of great frustration in ministry, when I am exhausted and the problems seem to never end. I forget in those moments that my real battle is not against people and problems, but rather a deep spiritual battle.
When we remember that the battle is against the enemy, it makes us real in God’s view. We can remember to stand in His power, because clearly you and I cannot fight an enemy of this magnitude alone!
In Christ We Put On The Whole Armor Of God
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and after all, to stand firm. (Ephesians 6:13)
…apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5b) I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13) The only way we can stand is in the strength of His power. (Ephesians 6:10)
As spiritual warriors, we equip ourselves with an offensive and five defensive pieces of our God-given armor:
Throughout September we will take a closer look at the whole armor of God and how you can apply the concepts of spiritual armor in your daily life.
The Living… — Ephesians 6:11 (niv)
We pray that you will gain a deeper understanding of the protection and strength that God has given you!
God has transformed Patti from a fearful young woman into a truly joyful mother. She is passionate about encouraging women to seek Jesus hard and find the freedom to enjoy the life they have been given. Patti writes at Joyful Mama and with her daughter at Blossoms and Posies. Did you know the devil is real? The Bible describes Satan as our enemy. It began in the Garden of Eden when Satan tempted Eve to sin against God by eating the forbidden fruit. In the Old Testament book of Zechariah, the author describes Satan accusing someone of being impure and sinful and therefore unworthy of salvation and purification. In the New Testament, Satan is described as a roaring lion that seeks to devour him. Satan is real and threatens us with spiritual warfare. We are at war! Fortunately, God has given us the tools to equip and prepare for this battle against Satan.
Put on the whole armor of God so that you can stand against Satan’s schemes. (Ephesians 6:11 NKJV)
As the author continues, he talks about the nature of our war against Satan – a spiritual war. He then walks us through what God’s armor is and how it can help us.
Put On The Full Armor Of God
The author tells us to connect ourselves with the truth as soldiers. When you think of a soldier’s full armor, you don’t usually think of a belt. However, the author has mentioned this tool before. The belt was important in Roman armor because it held the scabbard, and thus the sword. Without a belt, you’ll probably be without a sword. Also, the belt had a leather strap attached to it to help protect the thighs but also give freedom so you can move quickly and easily in hand-to-hand combat. The most amazing thing on our side is the truth. When we are in battle with Satan we need our sword (the Word) for protection. Truth is found with the Word of God. We can use truth to help us maneuver around the enemy quickly and easily while protecting our foundations.
The natural breast plate covers the torso and protects vital organs from injury. Righteousness helps protect us from potentially deadly spiritual blows from the devil. He who is righteous is righteous. There is no one who is righteous alone, we receive our righteousness as a gift from God. This righteousness is important to save us from death.
A soldier needs good shoes when going into battle. Imagine a fully armed soldier. He has his sword, shield, helmet, chest and belt… but his legs are completely bare. It is strange and dangerous. Covered legs not only protect you from debris but also give the soldier peace of mind. In short, proper footwear allows the soldier to move freely and without fear while giving his full attention to the battle at hand. The gospel of peace here is the gospel mentioned in the New Testament. It is the gospel of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ that saves us and gives us peace with God. As soldiers of the cross, we are commissioned by our Captain to preach the gospel. As we proclaim the good news of God’s kingdom, we will spread His way of peace throughout the world. With our shoes on, we are ready to go forward, to share this good news with others.
So far, Paul’s description of the armor of God has been limited to the things we wear. We wear belts, chests and shoes and they basically hold themselves together. The shield is different. The author tells us that a shield is something we must take and use to protect ourselves. Shields are very important in battle. Due to its huge size, soldiers were afforded great protection from enemies. Due to its slight curve, it was able to deflect attacks without transferring the full force of the attack to the man holding the shield. He was also able to deflect fierce blows that could have been fatal. Our faith serves as a defensive tool for us in our war against Satan. A shield protects, just as our faith protects us from spiritual attacks. The shield deflects the fiery darts of Satan’s doubts, worries, and temptations. Faith is a big thing. Great faith can protect us and sustain us in battle, but little weak faith can cause us to fail and die.

A helmet protects the head from enemy attacks. A Roman helmet was protective, but also had a special ceremonial meaning that indicated rank and status. Mukti basically means liberation or liberation from something. Our sins are killing us and Satan knows it. When in spiritual warfare, Satan will use any weapon he can to get us to sin. Jesus died for us to save us from sin. We can find great hope and comfort by focusing on the incredible sacrifice Christ made to save us and the wonderful kingdom that is the goal of our salvation. This hope works like a helmet to protect our minds from disappointment and despair in this world. We must keep the hope of our salvation safe and always in our minds to help us in this battle.
I don’t believe you can think of a soldier carrying a sword.
