Feeling Nauseous All The Time Not Pregnant – Do you feel a little “knocked down” in the morning? If you feel moody, lethargic, and tired, you may also feel nauseous or feel like your stomach is just not right. If you google your symptoms, you’ll probably convince yourself you’re pregnant. But morning sickness isn’t necessarily “morning sickness.” There are many other reasons why you are not so warm.
“Nausea is a difficult symptom to identify because it’s not always the result of a gastrointestinal problem,” says Daniela Khodorkovsky, MD, a gastroenterologist at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. And while pregnant women experience morning sickness (and in some cases throughout the day), there are a number of other reasons why you might feel this way.
Feeling Nauseous All The Time Not Pregnant
Dr. Khodorkovsky says that if you’re tossing and turning at night, sleeping irregularly, or waking up much earlier than usual, or have insomnia, your natural circadian rhythms will be disrupted, which can make you feel nauseous. Research has shown that your digestive system is linked to your circadian rhythms, so if you mess with one, the other is likely to suffer as well.
Why Do I Feel Sick? Doctors Explain Some Of The Most Common Causes Of Nausea
Your stomach may feel weird in the morning because your blood sugar is low, Dr. Khodorkovsky says. “As counterintuitive as it sounds, having a light snack or breakfast when you’re feeling sick in the morning can completely relieve symptoms,” she says. If you’re also used to eating breakfast first thing in the morning, right after waking up, but you skip it because you had very early plans, your body might be confused. In any case, a small snack to get something in the stomach is usually all that’s needed to relieve the nervousness, Dr. Khodorkovsky says. Try to eat a balanced amount of complex carbohydrates and protein, such as a small bowl of oatmeal with seeds and nuts.
If it’s not, you may have acid reflux, which can sometimes make you feel sick in the morning, “especially if you ate a heavy meal the night before,” says Dr. Khodorkovsky. If you eat fatty foods, it delays stomach emptying, making it easier for acid to rise up your esophagus when you lie down and sleep, she says. “For patients with middle-of-the-night reflux symptoms, we also recommend elevating their head with pillows,” she says. If you know you have acid reflux, Dr. Khodorkovsky says you should wait at least two to three hours to lie down after eating, and avoid heavy, fatty foods at night altogether.
Several causes of morning sickness have nothing to do with your stomach at all, such as a runny nose or sinus congestion, says Dr. Khodorkovsky. Anxiety can also cause nausea, so if you’re nervous before a flight or an early morning meeting, that could be the reason you feel so sick, she says.
Morning sickness can be something you just get used to over time, but it’s easy to prevent once you figure out what’s causing it, says Dr. Khodorkovsky. First, try to get a good night’s sleep and work on establishing a consistent sleep pattern. When you’re feeling nauseous, it’s best to eat light meals and make the most of your day by avoiding high-sugar foods and caffeinated beverages. And if nausea is a concern, you might want to consider a relaxation technique, such as meditation or going for a walk, especially on days when you expect stomach problems.
What Are The Early Signs Of Pregnancy And Symptoms ?
Of course, if you’ve had a lot to drink the night before, there’s always the chance that you’re just hungover. What makes almost everyone sick! Think about what you’ve been drinking, mixing drinks and dark spirits are the worst offenders! If you’re trying one of these 31 hangover remedies we’ve ventured to carefully test, or try snacking on some of these “hangover foods” that will help.
And if none of this sounds like you, but you’re feeling sick most mornings, then you might want to consider taking a quick pregnancy test and checking your time, since morning sickness is a sign that you’re pregnant, she says.
“Of course, if you have symptoms like vomiting, weight loss, severe headaches or stomach aches, see your doctor,” she says. Otherwise, it’s best to eat a little and get a good night’s sleep—and honestly, what more could you want?
