The Kannada script (अक्षरमाले akṣaramāle or वर्नमामाले varṇamāle) is a phonemic alphabet of 49 characters. The character set is almost identical to that of other Brahmi texts. Consonant letters refer to habitable vowels. The letters representing the consonants are combined to form double texts (उततक्षर ottakṣara) without accompanying vowels. Otherwise, each letter corresponds to a syllable.
The Kannada words of the alphabet are अक्षार akshara, अककरा akkara and varna varṇa. Each letter has its own form (अकार ākāra) and sound (शबद śabda) which give visual and audible representation respectively. Kannada is written from left to right.

The Brahmi script evolved into the Kadamba script by the 5th century, which later became the Kannada-Telugu script (or ‘Old Kannada script’) in the 7th century.

Kannada has defined two categories of consonants (व्यांजन vyan̄jana): regular consonants and irregular consonants.

Kannada literature used the letters ಱ (pronounced ‘ṟ’ or ‘rh’) and ೞ (pronounced ‘ḻ’, ‘lh’ or ‘zh’), with an accent very similar to that of modern Malayalam. and Tamil. The letters ended in episodes 12 and 18, respectively. Later functional Kannada replaced ‘rh’ and ‘lh’ with र (ra) and ल (la) respectively.
It is still used to write the Badaga language and vowel + virama + ḻ is used to write its retroflex vowels.
The second letter (or unclassified vyanjana (consonant)) is ‘nh’ or ‘inn’. Similarly, it has a counterpart in Telugu where it is called Nakaara pollu. The use of this consonant was observed till the 1980s in Kannada in most coastal areas of Karnataka (especially in the Dakshina Kannada region). Now major works rarely use this consonant. This letter has been replaced by the letter н (consonant n).
