Today, we’re going to talk about election, which is a fancy, theological word for “the chosen,” and we’re going to talk about how God chooses people to be in his group and how you can make sure that when it comes. in choosing to play in God’s team, you can be sure that you are chosen first. Not the end; Not in the middle, but first. The captain of our team is Jesus, and he wants to choose you first. We’ll see how that goes today.
As we prepare for this, I want to make sure I say from the beginning that I believe in election and predestination. This is a biblical truth that cannot be ignored or disputed. However, I want to say at the outset that I also believe that the two most common religious practices of election and predestination are both wrong. These two systems are commonly known as Calvinism and Arminianism. Calvinism is named after the reformer John Calvin, and Arminianism is named after the reformer James Arminius. Many people believe that you have to be one or the other, a Calvinist or an Arminian. But after reading them both carefully, I am proud to say that I am not. And I am not a hybrid of the two—a Calminian, as some like to say. What I am, I have no name—other than Christianity—and I know many out there who believe in this story just as I do.
Many people think that the entire debate between Calvinism and Arminianism revolves around the issue of election and predestination. There is much more than that. For many years I was a 5-point hyper-Calvinist, and I want to share with you what I have learned since then. But we have no place here.
Verses That Call Us To Have Faith Over Fear
Ephesians 1:3-14 is all one long sentence in Greek. Therefore, everything should be seen in one piece. But our Western, English-speaking minds have trouble understanding such a long sentence, so our Bible translators have broken it down into more manageable chunks. Overall, the flow of this sentence is that we have spiritual resources from God the Father (Ephesians 1:4-6), the Son (Ephesians 1:7-12) and the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Ephesians 1:3. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places of Christ,
Ephesians 1:3 is a summary of chapters 1, 2 and 3. This is the thesis sentence. Paul begins by praising God for this spiritual blessing. And Paul tells us where these blessings are – in the heavenly places. These are not earthly treasures that are destroyed by moth and rust, and thieves break in and steal; These are real, eternal heavenly blessings.
Remember several years ago when there were “Made in America” stickers on clothing and appliances and equipment? They were said to be better made and last longer than foreign products. I think this can be argued, but Paul’s point here is that these blessings are written upon us with the seal “made in heaven.” They will continue.

Note also the key word “in Christ.” We are blessed because we are in Christ Let me share with you a little what this word means – because it affects the way we understand all the scriptures. First, no one can believe in “Christ”. Only believers are “in Christ.”
Second, being in Christ is something that happens to us when we believe in Christ for eternal life. No one is in Christ before he is saved Being in Christ gives believers blessings and rights that the rest of the world does not have. Take this passage as an important lesson on election and predestination, since the phrase “he chose us” appears in this verse.
Given the selection, there are three questions we can ask ourselves that will help us understand the text – and all texts like it. First, who are elected, secondly when are they elected, thirdly, why are they elected? Let’s answer them one by one.
The text says that he chose us from him. The phrase “to him” tells us that this blessing of election is something we have in Christ. Christ is the first chosen one. Christ is God’s chosen servant (cf. Luke 9:35; 23:35; 1 Peter 2:4, 6).
Many people teach that God’s choice and election has to do with choosing which unsaved sinners He wants for Him. But immediately, we see the problem with this, because Christ is the first chosen one, and he was not an unsaved sinner. Whether it is true or not that God chooses to save certain unsaved sinners, we can see that, at least through Jesus, God’s choice or choice is not to save unsaved sinners all the time. Ephesians 1:4 shows us that when God chose Christ, He also chose us. Who does “we” refer to? From Ephesians 1:1-2, they refer to Paul and the believers he wrote to. The word “we” in verse 3 refers to those who are blessed in the heavenly realm. In verses 6, 7 and 8, the word “we” refers to those who have received the riches of God’s grace. So who is referring to them? It will not refer to anyone but those who are already Christians.
So here we see exactly the same thing that we saw with Christ. Christ is the eternal Son of God, and God has chosen him for a special work. But in choosing Christ, God also chose those who are in Christ—in other words, Christians. This verse does not teach that God chose unrepentant people to become Christians. This verse teaches that God chose Christians.
Sometimes, when trying to understand a verse like this, it helps to see what is not being said. If, as many teach, God chooses those whom He wants to save, and overpowers all others (single predestination) or actively chooses to send others to hell (double predestination), then this verse should read “He chose us to exist.” .”him.” If God chooses some born again to be born again, this verse should say that God has chosen us to be with him. But not what it says. It says, “He chose us to himself” not “He chose us to be in him.” Whatever this choice is, it is done when we are already in Christ Christ and Christians are chosen, but the emphasis is on Christ.
Jesus is ultimately the chosen one, and being in Christ, we are chosen because he is chosen.
