God Is Awesome In This Place Chords – Ah… the pentatonic scale: the universal language of guitar playing and the first steps in solo heaven. If you’ve ever tried to learn chords, this was probably the first scale you learned:
If so, this is a great place to start, as you can easily move the neck up or down to play any note you want! It’s a very versatile option to get you started on your own journey. A scale pattern in a closed position (no open strings) like the one shown above and roughly on the same set of strings is called a box pattern. If you want to play more notes at the same pitch at other points on the fretboard, you can learn more box patterns!

While this is a perfectly valid and reasonable approach, let’s be honest – who wants to stay in a box? Perhaps the most useful scale pattern (once you’ve learned your first pentatonic scale) as you progress through your solo majors is the diagonal pentatonic scale. Don’t worry – it’s not as hard as it sounds. This pattern allows you to slide it up and down the neck with relative ease and is based on an easy to learn pattern! Here’s what it looks like in A minor/C major:
Break Out Of The Box With These Pentatonic Patterns
Here’s the same pattern, but starting with the three notes of E, this time in G major/E minor:
1. You can play the 3-note part of the scale with three different fingers extended, or you can add a 2-note slide. Slideshows are convenient for two reasons:
2. Notice where the root notes of the minor pentatonic and major pentatonic scales are marked. The major and minor keys may have different roots but the same scale, so you can use the same pattern for both! Since this pattern repeats in 3 different octaves, it is very useful for learning how to center the scale and arrows on the root and key center. Try this formula on minor (focusing on the minor root) and major (focusing on the major root) and see how it sounds!
3. Another advantage of the diagonal scale is how naturally it transitions up and down the neck – a feature that allows you to easily fit into the box pattern you’ve already practiced! Here are a few charts illustrating how the diagonal scale pattern overlaps with common closing positions.

Once you become familiar with the Diagonal Pentatonic Scale, you’ll start to notice its elements in classic guitar riffs. Plug it in and use it on simple riffs like The Temptations’ My Girl or Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Child (kind of a comeback), and don’t hesitate to take it to the extreme with the Eagles’ Life in the fast Lane!
