Once upon a time there was a man who was looking for a perfect home in the mountains. He had seen many houses but could not find what he would call his home. One day, his real estate agent drove him down a long winding road filled with potholes and weeds to a clifftop house at the top of the mountain.

When they reached the house, the man stood there and looked sadly at the structure. It was a very old building, unpainted and long abandoned. The shutters are down and the porch is rotting. And the once beautiful door was broken. The man tried to go around the back, but the house was built right on the edge of the cliff. There is no way into the house except through the broken front door.

As the man climbs the dilapidated stairs to the front door, he begins to wonder why the real estate agent would bring him to such a strange house. He walked to the door and opened it just enough to enter the abandoned house. As the door opened, the man could see cobwebs and dust in the stuffy air after years of neglect.

When the man finally entered the house, he began to notice a bright light coming from the back of the house. He walked through the dusty air to a magnificent door of mahogany and leaded glass. Through the cut glass, light shines and shines throughout the old house.

Man wants to see more light. He opened the beautiful door and stepped out onto the immaculately kept porch with fresh paint and inviting rocking chairs. The view that had been hidden from the front of the house was now spectacularly visible to him. Looking across the valley, the horizon stretched on forever. The river below leads to a massive waterfall. Birds hovered above the upside down air currents and the man could hear the laughter of children and the ringing of church bells. It was as if man was looking through all of creation. Without hesitation, the man told the broker that he would buy the house.

It’s been so many years. Attracted by the beauty of the light streaming through the back door and the beautiful view from the back porch, the man decided to make this house his home. He painted, repaired and arranged his home so that guests could see the rear view of the house and experience the light and beauty just as he first saw it many years ago.

But the man forgot one thing: the facade of the house. Guests will drive on the old road overgrown with weeds. The front porch still looks rotten and the front door is still broken. The man didn’t take the time to remodel the facade of his house because he knew that what was inside his house was much more important than the facade of the house. And every time a visitor came to visit, he felt a pang of pain when the guest had to go through the old dilapidated door into his now beautiful home. Now it’s time for him to work on the broken front door.

We are the broken door! We need repairs. Maybe our doors just need to oil the hinges. Perhaps it needs planning to accommodate the opening as the house has been stable for many years. It probably has some rotten spots that need plastering, sanding and repainting. No matter what it needs, it can be opened even in broken condition.

The interior of the house is our heart, soul and mind. These are the first areas we need to fix to make them attractive to the guests we invite inside.

Our guests are the people we meet every day. Everyone we meet in all environments we live – at home, at work and in our communities can see through our actions and words what is in our hearts.

Daily Devotion — An Attitude Of Gratitude

That magnificent, beautiful, perfect back door is our Savior, Jesus Christ. And the view from the back porch is God’s view. The only way we can get to God is through the door of Jesus Christ.

The splendor is completely obscured unless you enter through the broken front door. Even if our doors creak, have rotten spots, and aren’t square, people can still enter our homes and experience Christ in us. Upon entering, our guests will experience the warmth and love inside. They will soon see that you have placed everything in your home around the shining light of Jesus Christ and that Jesus is the door to God.

Now comes the challenge part. We cannot, we must not wait for the door to be perfect to invite others into our lives to meet Jesus who dwells within. That we have to work on our door is true. The aging, deterioration of the door is a sin in our life. The rain of selfishness, the wind of worldly cares, will always knock at our door. But if we expect perfection, we will deny others the opportunity to meet Jesus. And it is through Jesus that we bring others to God. Jesus calls us when we are – broken – to be the door through which others can enter to meet him. I grew up in Brazil and there was no Thanksgiving, so I wasn’t introduced to Thanksgiving until my teens, and it wasn’t until I got married that I really started to appreciate this American holiday.

I brought this up in front of some kids last week and they were shocked that there are parts of the world that don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. I tried to explain that Brazil has a different history than the US, no pilgrims, no harsh winters, etc. I’m not sure I was clear enough, I’m not sure I was able to communicate the differences.

I love Thanksgiving, not only for the beauty of its origins, but precisely because the idea of spending a day giving thanks drove me crazy. I also find the idea that Black Friday happens immediately after a day devoted to Thanksgiving very confusing. I guess we’re not as grateful as we think we are, or maybe, the right sale would make us even more grateful!

I won’t talk about consumerism at this point, nor will I talk about the Pilgrims, but I do want to talk about thanksgiving.

The hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” is attributed to Martin Rinkart and is believed to have been written around 1636.

This hymn now tends to be sung more often at this time of year when many families across the United States gather to enjoy hearty meals. But the context in which this hymn was written is very different.

“A pastor and his family sang this hymn before dinner to give thanks to God for the leftovers they had on the table in their squalid home in a deserted refugee town, where famine, disease, and war.” (the source)

Martin Rinkart lives with his family in the walled city of Eilenburg, which has become a haven for political and military fugitives. This has led to overcrowding, deadly epidemics and famine. The army overran Eilenburg three times, looting and killing. The Rinkart house was a refuge for victims, even though it was often difficult for him to provide for his family. During the height of the severe plague in 1637, Rinkart was the only surviving clergyman in Eilenburg, conducting as many as 50 funerals in a single day. He conducted more than 4,000 funerals that year, including his wife’s. (source, source)

In everything give thanks, because this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I have been in situations, and I believe many of you too, in places where it was extremely difficult, if not impossible, to say thank you.

We are not naturally attracted to gratitude. Personally, I seem to have a natural tendency to be drawn to complaints.

For me, the problem seems to be that if I don’t learn to be grateful for everything, I may never thank you at all. There always seems to be something that can make us happier, something that could be better.

I believe this is why Black Friday is so popular. No matter how grateful we are, we can still be happier with something else. However, isn’t it true that the more we practice thanksgiving, the happier and more fulfilled we become?
