I struggled with starting with the biblical implications first, since most of this argument revolves around specific texts. However, I begin with the meanings of the Trinity because they are drawn from a large number of biblical witnesses to the Trinity and thus help us better understand passages that may be more thorny or confusing. If these threefold meanings are true and are derived from the major biblical texts about God, then the more difficult biblical passages must be interpreted according to the rule of major ecclesiology.
In the case of Jesus’ baptism, we should not conclude that he needed the anointing of the Spirit to do God’s work. Simply put, the above Trinitarian affirmations and biblical reasoning are consistent with classical, historical Christian thinking and conclusions. While Kenotic Christology may seem useful on the surface, it is ultimately a new perspective that undermines some of the most basic and fundamental teachings of the Bible about God and Christ.
