Jesus And The Holy Spirit – In the early church, the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17) was a third gift text. I want to briefly touch on two related (very related) issues with the introduction of kenotic christology, one trinitarian and the other biblical.

I struggled with starting with the biblical implications first, since most of this argument revolves around specific texts. However, I begin with the meanings of the Trinity because they are drawn from a large number of biblical witnesses to the Trinity and thus help us better understand passages that may be more thorny or confusing. So, in summary, let’s examine how Kenotic Christology undermines some basic historical affirmations about the Trinity.
Jesus: The Great I Am

If these threefold meanings are true and are derived from the major biblical texts about God, then the more difficult biblical passages must be interpreted according to the rule of major ecclesiology.
In the case of Jesus’ baptism, we should not conclude that he needed the anointing of the Spirit to do God’s work. Yes, there is a sense that he does not perform miracles or signs until after baptism, but (1) miracles and signs are not the only way he performs divinity and (2) he would be divine even if he did not. miracles.
It makes more sense to say the threefold statement above that the work of the Spirit is inseparable from the work of Jesus, rather than that Jesus needs the Spirit. The events of Jesus’ birth clearly show his divine nature preserved in the flesh (“Son of God”, “God with us”, etc.), seeing him with his knowledge and authority the leaders in the temple do so. Therefore, in the wording or context of this passage, or anywhere else in the big picture of Scripture about God, a kenotic understanding is not necessary or optional.
Simply put, the above Trinitarian affirmations and biblical reasoning are consistent with classical, historical Christian thinking and conclusions. While Kenotic Christology may seem useful on the surface, it is ultimately a new perspective that undermines some of the most basic and fundamental teachings of the Bible about God and Christ.
