Jesus Message About The Kingdom Of God – “The kingdom of heaven/God is at hand”, was a radical thing to say to Jesus and the disciples. When the disciples came to the village and said “the kingdom of God is at hand”. It’s like “the revolution has arrived!” “We will defeat the Romans”. The Jews were waiting for a new king, like David, who would make Israel great and independent again.
We miss the impact because “Kingdom of God/Heaven” has become church talk or jargon. We also know that Jesus’ version of the Kingdom is not about political parties or armies, but about healing, new life, wholeness, and above all, compassion. The world is broken and full of broken people.

To meet this need, Jesus healed and taught, but he also did other things. He created the church as an instrument of mercy and healing. He made us shepherds of sheep and laborers of life. He authorized and empowered us to heal and sent us to proclaim the good news and bring his healing. Those early disciples may have thought of power and armies when Jesus first told them about the Kingdom, but they discovered that Jesus was a power of compassion and healing. That must be incredibly exciting!

We are in a world that needs guidance and healing, but Jesus commands and empowers us to be workers in the harvest, to bring compassion, healing, and integrity. It is a revolution. The kingdom of heaven is near.

In Luke 17:20-21, Jesus said, “The kingdom of God will not come by observing; neither will they say, ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ For truly the kingdom of God is within you” (NKJV). The context of Jesus’ statement is the question He was asked by those who criticized His Pharisees because they asked when the kingdom of God would come (v. 20).
Jesus’ answer is that the kingdom of God will not come in the way the Pharisees expected. The kingdom is not opened by show or glory; there will be no great and illustrious ruler who will lay a geographical claim and destroy the Romans; rather, the kingdom will come quietly and unseen, like yeast working in a batch of dough (see Matt. 13:33). In fact, Jesus said, the kingdom has begun, right under the noses of the Pharisees. God reigned in the hearts of some people, and the King himself stood among them, although the Pharisees did not understand this fact.

Different translations render the Greek of Luke 17:21 in different ways. The phrase translated “within you” in the KJV and NKJV is translated “among you” in the NIV, NASB, and NET; “to you” in the NLT and HCSB; and “in your midst” in the ESV. Earlier versions of the NIV have “yours” and a marginal note referring to “among you.” Clearly, there is a difference between “the kingdom of God is within you” and “the kingdom of God is in your midst.”
“Within you” becomes an objectionable translation because Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees at the time. Jesus certainly did not say that the kingdom of God rested in the hearts of the Pharisees. The Pharisees opposed Jesus and had no relationship with God. Elsewhere, Jesus condemned them as “whitewashed tombs” and “hypocrites” (Matthew 23:27).
A better translation would be “among you” or “among you”. Jesus told the Pharisees that He had brought the kingdom of God to earth. The presence of Jesus in their midst gave them a taste of kingdom life, as evidenced by the miracles Jesus performed. Elsewhere, Jesus spoke of his miracles as definitive proof of the kingdom: “If I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Luke 11:20) .
In Luke 17:21, there are three common interpretations of Jesus’ words that the kingdom of God is within you (or among you): 1) The kingdom of God is within, in the human heart; 2) the kingdom is within your reach if you make the right choices; and 3) the kingdom of God is in your midst in the person and presence of Jesus. The best of these interpretations seems to be the third: Jesus opened the kingdom by changing people’s hearts, one by one.
