At one point, “Lean On” was the most streamed song ever on Spotify, but like most great ideas, the project wasn’t necessarily a hit at first glance. According to Diplo, he initially wrote the song as a slower reggae-inspired track. He gave it to Nikki Minaj and Rihanna, who both jumped at the chance to sing on the record. While she admittedly wasn’t the group’s first choice, MØ ended up knocking the event out of the park.

Although they found the singer, Diplo wasn’t necessarily married to the production. After spending time making tempo and stylistic changes, he eventually felt the production still lacked the kind of “attitude” it needed, so he enlisted the help of DJ Snake to add that extra spark.

Nearly seven years after the release of Major Lazer’s “Lean On,” MØ’s name remains synonymous with the smash hit.

However, the Danish singer-songwriter has complicated feelings about his legacy – especially the music video, which was mostly shot in India.
“I was so excited to make that video and I was so excited to be invited into Major Lazer’s visual universe because I always thought they had such a cool style,” MØ said.
“The video is so beautiful and amazing, but I definitely think it’s cultural appropriation,” she said. “And I’m so glad people warned me about it, because I didn’t really understand at the time.”
When the song was released, Major Lazer consisted of American EDM star Diplo, Trinidadian producer Jillionaire and Jamaican-American DJ Walshy Fire.

According to Diplo, MØ was named the lead singer of the song after Rihanna and Nicki Minaj turned it down. She helped rewrite the song in a faster tempo, on the instrumental of the German producer Jr Blender. French producer DJ Snake delivered a wordless, high-pitched roar.
Diplo later praised MØ’s contribution, telling Time that she “sounded better than anyone on that record.”
“Lean On” quickly became the biggest hit of 2015. It was crowned Spotify’s most streamed song of all time in a few months (a title that was later ceded to Drake’s “One Dance”) and was recently certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In less than a year, the music video became one of the few to surpass one billion views on YouTube. Since then, it has exceeded 3 billion.

However, for all its popularity, “Lean On” was met with critical skepticism and accusations of appropriation. MØ, Diplo and their co-artists are shown in the video in “traditional Indian style and clothing” and perform Bollywood-inspired choreography while surrounded by South Asian dancers.
Diplo, who credited India with inspiring him to “keep pushing the boundaries” of music, lashed out in 2018.
“Being a white American, you have no cultural capital unless you play Appalachian fiddle music or something. I’m just a product of my environment,” he added.
For her part, MØ said she wasn’t educated on the line between cultural appreciation and appropriation when the video was made – but now believes it’s “so important to talk about it”.

I understand it much better now, she said. “I’m still learning. It’s really something I’m thinking about a lot right now, with the aesthetic and the way I approach my look and myself and my songs. I’m not perfect and it’s a learning process, but, I mean, it’s been problematic.”
MØ, who releases her third album “Motordrome” on Friday, also said she’s grateful to fans who embraced “Lean On” and continue to support her music.
“Now, after all these years and looking back on it, I’m so devastated that it actually happened,” she said.
“I was just an up-and-coming indie pop artist. And then that song, all of a sudden, opened all the doors for me,” she continued. “And it was really overwhelming, but it was also the adventure of my life.” This is the latest achievement from Major Lazer and DJ Snake, whose single “Lean On” continues to break records in 2016. The unexpected hit conquered the entire music scene. industry, and now adds 1 billion YouTube views to his already impressive resume. But even though the public adored “Lean On,” the song was excluded from the Grammys this year, except for a footnote in Diplo’s nomination for Best Producer, a non-classic song.
