Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby
On October 26, Nicki surprised fans and released the song’s artwork on Instagram. The cover featured the names of all four collaborators on the cover, but only Nicki, Drake and Lil Wayne were pictured, excluding Chris. On the cover, which is animated, Nicky Shades is wearing a smock that makes him look like a true boss. Drake wears a pop hat with the Young Money symbol on it, and Lil Wayne wears a suit and tie (dressing as a businessman).
“Bear” received generally positive reviews from critics. Carolyn Maness of Music Times gave the song a positive review, saying “With a deep sense of confidence and a boast of her own sexual and rapping prowess, Minaj takes the reins, channeling the same vulgar and explosive rap verses from Drake and Wayne Miles. Ramer of Entertainment Weekly praised Minaj’s rap, calling Chris Coplan of Consequences of Sound said that while not the strongest effort from the trio, the song was “a great showcase of how their separate and distinct personalities show. Still can play off each other well.” Noisey’s Drew Millard praised Lil Wayne’s verse, saying, “Minaj continues to rap lap around the competition, and there’s no sign that’s going to change anytime soon”.
Matthew Trammell of The FADER gave the song a negative review, saying that Minaj delivers “sleepy lines” and sounds “a little desperate”.
The music video was shot by Hannah Lux Davis on November 2, 2014. It premiered on VEVO on December 12, 2014.
For The Last Time, Nicki Minaj Did Not Hook Up With Drake!
Nicki posted a video for the song on her VEVO on November 7. It received considerable media attention due to the controversial nature of its alleged depiction of Nazi imagery. Minaj later denied the claims, stating that the artist of the song’s video had made references to ‘metalocalypse’ and ‘sin city’. She also apologized for the confusion, responding via Twitter that she [s]akes full responsibility if it offends anyone. I will never accept Nazism in my art.
Yeah, I’ve never fucked Nicki because she has a man, but when it comes down to it, I’m first in line.
And nikki if you ever try to do shit let me know so i can plan for it pinkprint aye
The calendar says I’ve had money for days, I’m shaking and trembling, but I’m stuck in my way
Nicki Minaj Accused Of Glorifying Nazism In New Lyric Video For ‘only’
My girlfriend wanna beat the bitch if she waves, they bet they don’t fuck with her surfboard, her surfboard
You got a hiccup, you swallowed the truth, then I’ll make you burp, boy, treat the steak like a sirloin
Carry two pickaxes with me, wear a mask, they have small arms, don’t think about the son and daughter’s room
This shit is crazy, my n*gga; I mean rude, my n*gga, that money thing, I’ll say it again, my n*gga
Nicki Minaj, Drake & Lil Wayne Slay Viral Beat In Seeing Green!
My story is how I went from “poor me” to “please pour me a drink and celebrate with me” as someone who has wanted to get together since the first time they saw Nicki Minaj and Drake, the first line of Minaj’s new song. “Only” (featuring Drake, Lil’ Wayne and, Chris Brown) was heartbreaking. I mean, it’s not like I was living some kind of delusion. Despite Drake appearing in Minaj’s “Anaconda” music video to get a drunken lap dance, the two were never really more than good friends. i know But when I heard the lyrics, I couldn’t help but point out the rampant sexism here. It is in the first line of each stanza.
Nicki’s verse begins the song with, “Yo, I never fucked Wayne, I never fucked Drake. My whole life, man, damn it. If I did, I would. One of them menagerie and let them cupcake my ass.” Like eating.” Drake’s verse begins with, “I never fuck Nicki ’cause she got a man, but when it’s over, I’m first in line” and ends with, “And Nicki, if you ever f* * trying to do, just help me so I can plan it.” Finally, Lil’ Wayne’s verse begins with, “I never sneeze on Nicki and she’s shit. If I did, she’d be shit. Whoever hit her ain’t right, ’cause she need a d* behaved’ ** in his life.”
We will. Apart from feeling that I need to censor the whole paragraph, I couldn’t give the song a single look. Why does Minaj have to waste her verse defending herself against what seems to be a perpetual accusation, when Drake and Lil Wayne talk about all the ways they have sex with her and, even worse, how she needs them? is To do it because the person she likes to have sex with is bad? Not to mention the implication that she “acts like” she needs a man in her life. SMH.
I’ve heard the song over and over trying to make sense of such rampant sexism from someone like Minaj, who actively encourages women to support each other instead of tearing each other down and makes a point of calling out Barbies in any appearance. To keep her in school and support her amazing knowledge. Minaj is an outspoken feminist, so this was an odd song choice for her. It’s not like I expect rap music to suddenly change from where it is now to the most feminist brand of music in the world or anything. I mean, I listen to Eminem’s music and he’s never said a feminist thing about a woman in his songs, even though it’s his daughter.
Nicki Minaj Addresses Nazi Imagery In ‘only’ Lyric Video
But the more I listened to the song, the more I began to suspect that racism was the whole point. It becomes clear that Minaj is tired of the endless rumors that she’s sleeping with her Young Money labelmates, and under that lens, Drake and Lil Wayne’s verses become a source of parody. They poke fun at the sexual attitudes that have fueled these rumors, giving us a parody version of Drake who just hasn’t slept with Minaj because she’s in a relationship and is waiting for them to break up, and a parody version of Lil Wayne who believes. That Minaj needs a “d***” in her life and aims to give it to her. I highly doubt Minaj would have left these lines on the track if they were taken seriously, and I doubt even more that Minaj would be as close to Drake and Lil Wayne as she is if they really felt that way about her.
Was that the best way to get your point across? Definitely not. I mean, that said, it took me until the second rehearsal to stop being annoyed by it all and listen to what the song was trying to say. I also had to ignore the fact that Brown sang entirely. The nasty, sexist attitudes that Minaj brings out in “Bare” are pretty alarming when you consider how long she’s had to hear this from people, whether it’s been said to her directly or just implied. eye
