Most deacons in the Church of Wales also become priests, building their leadership on the role of servants, but some candidates may feel called to be deacons without increasing the priesthood. Those called to claim this diaconate will be expected to demonstrate special pastoral gifts and teamwork skills.
Others will feel called to continue living and working in the community they came from. Those who are called to do this service will be expected to be fully supported by these communities and the true expectation of what it means to be a ‘profane prophet’. Because it does not involve complete uprooting, domestic care is often unpaid and foster care is often not residential.
Others will feel called to go wherever the church sends them. Those called to carry out this service will have to show realistic expectations of how this will affect their families and dependents and the resilience needed for their success. Because it may involve complete uprooting, viable ministry may be paid for and training may or may not be accommodating.
Others feel called to ordained ministry in a pioneer setting. When this call is felt prior to ordination, candidates must fulfill specific preparation for pioneer service as well as criteria for ordination. When the call appears after ordination, specific preparation for the pioneer service can be used before being assigned to the pioneer service.
You Have Been Called And Chosen’ New Deacons Ordained
There are several different ways of being ordained in the Church in Wales. These are explained below very briefly, but feel free to talk to others (first your Delegate and then the Diocesan Director for Hierarchy and Vocations).
After detailed application and reflection and supported by recommendations and references, the Diocesan Director will schedule candidates to attend the Diocesan Evaluation Committee. This is usually a series of interviews conducted over 1 day.
The training is usually full-time for 2 or 3 years and is organized by the St Padarn Training Institute. There are different options for how this training will take place, which can be further discussed but it is worth checking the St Padarn’s website for some details on the types of training that take place (www. stpadarns.ac.uk)
The method will be the same as mentioned above for those who are in training for the Unpaid (used) position. For unsubsidized (local) ministry, candidates will attend the Diocesan Council and then the Provincial Council, which will make recommendations to the Bishop. The sacrament of holy orders in the Catholic Church has three ranks: bishop, priest, and deacon, in descending order, along with high priests. In the words “holy commandment”, the word “holy” means “set apart for a divine purpose”. The word “order” designates a civil organization or an organization established by authority, and means to be legally incorporated into an order. The Rite of Consecration takes place in the context of the Mass. After being called forward and cheered in front of the community, the candidates are interviewed. Each one promised to carry out the duties of the priesthood diligently and to respect and obey his ordinary right (bishop or religious superior). Candidates prostrate before the altar, while the gathered faithful kneel and ask for the help of all the saints while singing the Litany of All Saints.
