Origin Of My Last Name Free – In 1977, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) bet that a 12-hour miniseries based on Alex Haley’s best-selling novel “Roots” would appeal to American audiences. In an unprecedented move, ABC scheduled the series to air eight nights in a row.
The gamble paid off, as nearly half of Americans alive in 1977 saw at least one episode of the series.

If you are interested in your own family history, a good place to start is to create a family tree.
A family tree is a visual representation of a person’s ancestry, tracing relationships to common ancestors. Similar to an organizational chart, this chart typically presents a tree structure starting with one person as the root. From the root, lines representing branches end in boxes representing leaves. Each leaf represents an individual family member with information such as date of birth, marriage and death.
A family tree or genealogy chart makes it easy to record the people, places and events that make up your family history and then share it with others.
If you are interested in your ancestry or just want to gain some insight into who you are and where you came from, you may want to create a family tree.

A simple family tree can include you, your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. A more detailed family tree chart can include you, your parents, your siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
Also consider the direction in which you paint the tree. In nature, trees grow from the ground to the sky, but family trees can develop from the bottom up, top down, or horizontally on paper or a computer screen. Take a look at some sample family trees to help you decide how to draw your tree.
There is not even a definition of family tree that dictates what should be included or what a family tree should look like. But if you want to chart relationships without digging too deep, you might want to draw a simple kinship chart instead. Kinship charts use basic symbols, lines, and letters to represent relationships to help you visualize your genealogy.
To create your family tree, start by doing some research. Write down what you know, ask family members to fill in the gaps, and find pictures and documents. Visit libraries and online genealogy resources to search for censuses, news items, land records, and other records that can trace your ancestry.

Remember that you can only go back due to the limited availability of reliable documents. You may have heard someone say that they trace their ancestry back to Adam and Eve. But in reality, it is very difficult to find accurate records dating back hundreds of years, as many records have been destroyed by fire, flood, warfare and simple carelessness. Some areas of the world are better at keeping and preserving records than others, so how far back you can go will depend on where your family came from. Due to limited information, most family tree charts trace ancestors back three or four generations.
Gather all the information you have and make an outline. Start tracing your relationship with your ancestors from yourself, or start with the oldest ancestor you know and trace them back to you.

Each family member will be represented by a shape connected by lines to represent relationships. A box or rectangle is usually used to represent your relatives, but you can use any shape you want. Each figure is a leaf on a tree. The shape you decide to use as leaves should be consistent and sized to include the information you plan to include in your family tree.

Place pictures, important event dates and any other information you want to include on your magazine. When compiling this information, we recommend a few more guidelines:
If you want your family tree chart to be useful to other members of your family, keep the information simple so that it can be easily scanned and digested. Try to make each level of the tree represent a single generation, so it’s easy to find relationships.
Who should view this family tree chart? There may be some family secrets that not all living family members know about, so try to be sensitive about adding information that some of your relatives may not welcome.
Here’s the fun part – once you’ve completed your family chart or family tree, share it with your family members and give them a chance to reflect on their family history or learn new family stories. You can also invite them to provide more information.

For the past 3 years I have taught at my local library once a month about how and where to search for ancestors. Although most lessons focus on the Internet using wildcard search techniques, each session mentions the importance of evidence in building a family tree. Often people are satisfied with a record of a marriage in an index and cite it as proof of marriage. They don’t even bother to get a copy of the marriage certificate, information to do so is often included in the index information.
In 2009 I was looking for information on my grandparents who immigrated to the US from Germany in the late 19th century. All I knew was that his name was John and her name was Teresa. I found the German Genealogy Group of New York while searching online for sites with German databases. Their database manager was so advanced for the time that it allowed wildcards in search fields.
Of all the churches in New York City, my grandparents chose to get married at St. Leonard’s Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, one of the few indexed churches.
