(33) Seek first the kingdom of God. – The context shows that the words refer to “seeking” prayer rather than works, although of course the latter meaning is not excluded. What is therefore to be sought is the “kingdom of God” (the change from the less personal “kingdom of heaven” is considerable), the higher spiritual life in its fullness, for ourselves and for others; and with it we are to seek “his righteousness,” which, being perfect above the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, must be his gift to us, and therefore to be sought in prayer. He who seeks it can be content to leave everything else in his Father’s hands. Even without his asking, it will be “added to him” in the measure that is best for him. Among the many traditional sayings ascribed to our Lord, and which we may believe to be an authentic account of his teaching, one is similarly quoted from Origen and Clement of Alexandria: “Seek great things, and small things shall be added unto you: seek that which belongs to heaven, earth will be added to you.”
Verse 33 – Parallel passage: Luke 12:31, which is shorter. But; i.e. in contrast to the type of search he just spoke of, cf. Our Lord concludes with a clear promise that if God’s purpose is made the first goal, all the necessities of life will be supplied. You search first.
