Exodus 15:2 is known as the Song of Moses, the first song recorded in the Bible. It is the song that Moses and the people of Israel sang to celebrate crossing the Red Sea and escaping the Egyptians. It is a sacred song of worship and joy. Exalt him before God, is my strength, God is my song, God is my foundation. By encouraging us to spread the good news, God is our strength and salvation. He loves us and is our refuge and our hope! Let us sing his praises!

I shut up in my dark room and waited for the waves of the flare to lift. Oh, how I had tried to make my little light shine. I thought I had learned to see the signs of the coming of darkness; I thought I recognized when the waves of pain were approaching. But apparently I had missed one too many of these signs and felt “forced” into an isolating rest. My own light had failed and I struggled to catch a glimpse of how my Savior’s light could possibly shine in this dark room of pain.
And if we do, how do we let His light guide us through the dark days of pain and weakness?

David, the writer of this psalm, knew something about what it meant to face the dark places. King Saul had chased him and tried to kill him. In fact, when David wrote about the Lord being his stronghold, he had spent his own time living in the desert in a place known as “En Gedi’s strongholds.”
It was an abandoned place, with caves built into the sides of the rocks perfect for hiding. A sealed spring was hidden there with nourishing water for those who had survived the desert. Have you ever seen pictures from Israeli tour groups that have walked through the desert land of En Gedi?
The utter waste is shocking. How could God have led David to the dry and desolate lands? And yet it is precisely the phrase that David used while he was cut off from his home: GOD is the stronghold of my life. He had realized that the very place that felt so abandoned had become God’s protection during the years of his enemy’s persecution. God provided everything he needed in the days of desolation and even placed a spring of water in the midst of the barrenness.
The Greek word for “fortress” is defined here as: a place or means of safety, protection, refuge, stronghold.
