Lessons From The Parables: The Mustard Seed
Let’s start with Matthew 13, and also one of them can be found in Mark 4. In these parables, Jesus began by saying, “The kingdom of God is …” or “The kingdom of heaven is …” and then told the story .
We have dealt with this parable before. This is the first of seven parables about the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 13:24-30 He put another parable before them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while the people slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and left. When the grain sprouted and produced a harvest, the weeds appeared. And the master’s servants came and said to him: Lord! Have you not sown good seed in your field? Where does he get weed from? He said to them, “The enemy has done it.” The servants said to him, “Do you want us to go and get them?” But he said: “No, otherwise you gather weeds and pull out the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will say to the reapers, “Gather first the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, and gather the wheat into my barn.”
Matthew 13:36-43 NKJV Then Jesus sent the people away and entered the house. And his disciples went to him and said: “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field!” He answered them, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, and the weeds are the sons of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Therefore, just as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather all stumbling blocks and those who do wrong from his kingdom, and cast them into the fiery furnace. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine as the sun in their Father’s kingdom. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
The Purpose Of Parables Podcast
God has planted seeds in the soil of our hearts. What type of soil do you have? We must always have a reason that accepts the truth from God’s word. This is the idea of the kingdom! We must remember that growth starts small and in time the seeds will grow into a strong, healthy plant.
Jesus wants us to be that kind of person. Seeds do not have a choice of what soil they fall on, but we do have a choice of what soil we will be for the seed. We can choose to respond to the gospel. When trials come, we can choose to remain faithful to the gospel or backslide. When life gets boring or hectic, we can choose whether we want to bear fruit for the Kingdom. This is the message Jesus gives us.
I believe there is wheat and tares in this world and in every church. So many problems in this world where wrong is right and right is wrong. homosexuality and transgenderism, legalization of marijuana, hatred, self-centeredness, and much more seep into our lives and churches. Either we believe the Bible or we don’t, there is no in-between. Are you wheat or tares? We cannot be the suede of the world. We must stand and believe God’s word as the only truth, otherwise we are weeds and will burn at harvest time.
Mark 4:26-29 And he said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who sows seed on the ground, and he sleeps by night and wakes by day, and the seed sprouts and grows, but he himself is not a secret of the production. For the earth itself yields a harvest: first a blade of grass, then an ear of corn, then a full grain in an ear. When the grain is ripe, he immediately sets forth a sickle, for the harvest has come.
Chapter 13. The Kingdom
This story is about growth. The seed sown in a good and honest heart bears the fruit of patience; and this fruit is daily multiplied, although we do not know how the Word and the Spirit work, which brings multiplication; and then the farmer Christ gathers this good seed into the Kingdom of Heaven during the harvest. Again, let us be good soil and grow and obey Christ. We must always grow in Christ. If not, ask God why and He will show you. Perhaps you are neglecting your relationship with Him, you may be feeding yourself with other things instead of God. There will be a harvest, a gathering of wheat for storage in barns or in heaven. Allow yourself to grow in Christ and be a part of that harvest.
Matthew 13:31-32 31 He presented another parable to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which is the smallest of all seeds; and when it grows, it becomes greater than all the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and take refuge in its branches.
Here Jesus described the kingdom not just as a seed, but as the smallest seed. Jesus is not describing a kingdom that will come in a blaze of glory – he is describing a kingdom that starts very small. This is not what the Jews expected, but this is the kingdom that Jesus said was near. The Kingdom is a story of gradual growth.
This is a story of how one cannot neglect small beginnings. This is a story about believing in God to bring growth! It is also the story of growing your fire or zeal for the Lord.

Mustard Seed: Thayer Definition: Mustard, the name of a plant which in eastern countries grows from a very small seed and reaches the height of a tree, 10 feet (3 m) or more; hence a very small quantity of a thing is compared to a mustard seed, and also a thing growing to a remarkable size.
What can a small mustard seed do? It seems too small to have any value or worth. But mustard seeds are very pungent in smell and taste. When you plant it, it grows into a giant tree filled with small fire seeds. This is an example of our faith and growth and what we can achieve when we burn with a flame for God and bring the good news to others. More and more people are getting to know God and getting turned on to Him by making one person step out of their comfort zone.
Matthew 13:33 NKJV Another parable he spoke to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and put in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.
When yeast is first added to the bread dough, it is not very noticeable, but a small amount makes a big difference in the long run. The kingdom begins small and inconspicuous, but grows large. In the parable of the wheat, she also produces the harvest for the harvest.
The Parable Of The Mustard Seed
The small beginning of the kingdom would surprise Jesus’ listeners. They hoped that the Messiah would lead the Jewish people to a great victory over the Romans. They hoped to become an independent nation with the power of David’s kingdom and the wealth of Solomon. But Jesus preached that the Kingdom must begin very small.
These parables describe a long and slow process of growth.
