If someone hears the message of the kingdom and does not understand, evil will come and take away what has been planted in his heart. This is a seed planted along the way. The seed that fell among the thorns refers to the one who hears the word, but the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and make it unfruitful. But the word “seed that falls on good soil” refers to a person who hears and understands. This is a man who reaps a hundred, sixty, thirty times the corn he sows.
What should we learn from this parable? Two things stand out to me: availability and persistence. Some are not ready to receive the good news of the kingdom. Others like what they hear, but have no commitment to the kingdom. Some are attracted to the kingdom, but some commitments prevent them from being truly devoted.
But there are people who really understand when they hear the Gospel! And they promise! (because the kingdom requires commitment); These are members of the kingdom. It is important to be ready and committed to be a part of the kingdom of God. Are you ready? Are you persistent?
The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, the enemy came, planted a sow in the corn and turned away. When the corn germinated and the heads formed, the trees also appeared. The master’s servants came to him and said, “Sir, have you not sown good crops in your field?” Where did the weed come from? “The enemy did,” he replied. The servants asked him: “Do you want us to shoot?” “No,” he answered, “for when you pull up the tares, you may remove the wheat with them. Leave them both together until the harvest. So I say to the reapers: First gather the tares and bind them. Make bundles to burn them; Then gather the wheat and take it to my barn.
Matthew 13: The Kingdom Of Heaven Is Like
He who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the soil and the good seed represents the people of the kingdom. The weeds are evil people, and the enemy who plants them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. It will be at the end of the age as the weeds are pulled and burned with fire. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will destroy sinners and all evildoers from his kingdom. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where they will weep and gnash their teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s kingdom. Let those who have ears hear.
So what can we learn from this parable? First of all, I say that the details of parables are usually unimportant and only support the main point of the parable. So I have no judgment about life after smoldering furnaces and gnashing teeth.
But it looks like we can expect some non-royals to mingle with the royal family. However, it is not for us to determine who are the legitimate members of the kingdom, and we must not try to “purify” the kingdom of the insincere – or we will alienate some of the true members of the kingdom.
