The apostle Paul used weapons similar to those of the ancient infantry, as a form of spiritual armor that prepares believers. He may have had Roman soldiers in mind, although the weapons he was talking about were slightly different from those of the Roman soldiers. This is the reason why some scholars of the Bible say that it is likely that Paul combined this image of the Roman soldiers with some verses in the Old Testament that show God as a warrior.
