There are so many things I love about this story. The way Mary assumes that Jesus will help even though he never says he will. The way the servants think it can be crazy. That wine is the best wine of the day. It’s just a great story that makes me smile every time!

He gave wine to a party that had already drunk a lot of wine before that. It definitely makes me re-examine some of the attitudes I had towards alcohol growing up in a conservative church.
I heard sermons about how the wine was not very strong back then, but that never made sense because Paul often wrote about drunkenness. If wine couldn’t get you drunk, then why did he tell people not to?

I like this miracle because of its smallness. It wasn’t big and noisy. It didn’t help many people. And that is not even the greatest miracle of this chapter. It is just a woman and her son, but God sees that their suffering and fear is alleviated.

Not Balaam. It’s like it wasn’t even his first experience with this talking donkey. He just answers her in a normal conversation. My childhood dream came true.

The Israelites were living Indiana Jones’ worst nightmare, traveling in the desert, hungry and thirsty, when there was an invasion of poisonous snakes. Moses prayed for the snakes to go away, and God told him to make a metal snake and hold it up high for the people to see.
It is great because of the unexpected way God answered this prayer. He could have removed the thing that causes fear and anxiety, but instead tells people to look to this symbol in the midst of danger. I don’t really understand all the symbolism, but I’m sure there’s a sermon in there somewhere.
