What Is True Repentance According To The Bible – Is there such a thing as true repentance? Can you repent to God in error? Do you know that you can cry out to God but not repent of your sin? In today’s devotional we will explore the difference between true and false repentance.
As we see repentance, it is pain for what has been done and involves a desire to change so that it does not happen again in the future. From this definition of true repentance, we can recognize the false characteristics of false repentance. False repentance is saying you’re sorry but not really sorry. It is an act, a deception; does not encourage a person to change.

Have you ever had someone apologize to you and you rolled your eyes knowing they weren’t really sorry. You know from past experience that they will do it again and again and again if given the chance. Do you think God knows when we’re just sorry for saying sorry? Of course he is!
“It is a sin to be a fornicator or a fornicator, like Esau, who sold his birthright for a piece of flesh. For you know how afterwards, after inheriting the blessing, he was rejected because he found no room for repentance. though he sought diligently with tears.” Hebrews 12:16-17
Let’s look at an example of true repentance. The story of David and Bathsheba is well known. David impregnated another man’s wife and then killed her. And for a while King David was quite content with his sins and saw nothing wrong, until the prophet Nathan pointed out his guilt.
David began to feel a deep sense of guilt and shame for what he had done, which led him to repent and give us this beautifully written psalm. From Psalm 51 we see the blueprint for true repentance.

1. David’s grief over sin “He acknowledges my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.” Psalm 51:3
The first thing David did when he went to God in repentance was to admit his sin. Not after saying he did something really bad. He committed adultery and intentionally killed someone. The sign of true repentance is that we first admit what we have done wrong and repent. Many times we just regret that things went wrong or that we got caught; this is not the quality of true repentance.
2. He regretted that sin had separated him from God “Do not cast me away from your face and do not take your holy spirit from me.” Psalm 51:11
When we sin, we are separated from God. David knew that what he did hurt people, but he also knew that it hurt his relationship with God. So, in order to repair the bridge he had created with his sin, he asked God for forgiveness. David’s relationship with God was important to him. God appointed him as king, and for David to continue the success of his kingdom, he had to rely on God’s guidance.
Why Repentance Is Really About Joy
3. David wanted to change his heart “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a righteous spirit in me.” Psalm 51:10
True repentance requires a willingness to change. David knew that if he did not allow God to change his heart, he would return to his sinful ways. He wanted a pure heart and a renewed spirit. Not only did he regret what he had done, he never wanted to do anything like that again. David understood the ripple effect of his sin on his life and those around him, and it was his desire to turn to God and leave his sinful habits.
4. David was grateful for God’s forgiveness “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will show your glory.” Psalm 51:14- 15
David knew that he did not deserve forgiveness; it was not his right to be fired. He knew he had done something terribly terrible and was truly sorry. Therefore, David humbled himself before the throne of God. Then I was grateful for God’s free gift of forgiveness.
Repentance In The Confessions
We, like David, have the opportunity to receive God’s forgiveness. God has promised to redeem us from our sins if we repent. He has called us to his throne of grace.
“So let us go boldly to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in need.” Hebrews 4:16
Of course, sometimes we don’t really repent. Sometimes we regret what happened because of the sin, not the sin itself. Fortunately, we can ask God for a contrite heart and a contrite spirit. We can ask God to help us sincerely repent of our sin and help us turn from bad habits.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, do not despise.” Psalm 51:17 Prayer for today:

I’m broken, Lord. I know I may not always be truly sorry for what I have done, but today I am asking you to grant me true repentance. Create in me, Lord, a clean heart that will turn me away from sin forever.

Many try to justify or ignore their sins as a way to keep their conscience clean, but in doing so they reject God’s formula for cleansing, they accept the devil’s formula for remaining unclean and tend to do it again.
Confession of sin – Once sin is recognized, a person must immediately make a full confession to God so that the sin can be removed (read I John 1:9).
If a person acknowledges sin but does not confess it, it remains hidden; begin to grow; it bears fruit sooner or later in his character/life and attracts other greater sins.
Hate sin – If a person does not learn to hate sin, sin will surely strike again; seduce them and trick them into obeying you. Sin tastes sweet at first, repeats itself only when it takes root, and its consequences are so disastrous that it is better never to have participated.
What Is True Repentance?
God leads us to repentance (read Romans 2:14). It is a gift from God; those who reject him reject the grace of God. Accept repentance, never manipulate it. The danger of playing with repentance is that one may sin so many times that one cannot forgive (read Hebrews 6:4-6).
