Why Do We Fast And Pray – Is there something you’ve been praying for—something you want from God—that God hasn’t answered? Maybe more than one thing. Maybe it’s been so long since God answered your prayer that you wonder if it’s still there or if you’ve done something wrong or imagined the whole relationship. I can relate. For years I went along with everything Christian – except for the behavior and fear of religion – with great confusion. Now comes the question: Why do we fast and pray?
I know many of you are praying for big things. Big! You need spiritual development, and fasting and prayer is the way to get there.
Why Do We Fast And Pray
Great things. Some of those big things are painful things… Things you almost lost hoping that God will change. Things that need to be forgiven.
Days Of Prayer And Fasting — Stone Edge Church
If we enter a place where we need spiritual development, the question is not, “Why do we fast and pray?” but “How do we fast and pray?”!
We think about praying and fasting, but before we get there we need to talk about forgiveness. Choosing not to forgive is one of the biggest obstacles to spiritual success. I have a shirt to prove myself.
There are so many things I had to forgive that I won’t count them now. The big things (abuse and neglect) and the little things (annoyance from friends, harsh words that cut a lot). Life was a crazy ride where I did all the right things: praying, studying the Bible, going to church, participating in small groups, tithing, serving, etc. All this time, every time I come back, God refines me through trials.
Can I tell you in all honesty that with each attempt I sank into bitterness? It was only after I learned to forgive that God began to set me free. In this freedom, I saw many answers to prayer. Not that the trials have stopped, but there is joy in the presence of God, despite the difficulties!
Fasting & Prayer
What do we do in those times, the hard times when we feel like we’ve tried everything else?
In the Bible, when the situation seemed to require more than prayer, people observed fasting (or a period of fasting).
Does it seem too old and outdated? Why is fasting important to God? Did you know that Jesus spoke about it? Let’s wait together.
Then John’s disciples came to him and asked him, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees fast but your disciples don’t fast? And Jesus said to them: “They cannot be servants of the bridegroom or the bride with them, right? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast. Matthew 9:14-15

Why do we fast and pray? Yes, Jesus said his disciples would fast, but that is not enough reason for me to do things. Can you relate?
It took a lot of complicated situations to bring me to my knees. Even though I was on my knees, it took the pastors of God to persuade me to fast. Then it took years of practice to learn how to fast effectively and pray for spiritual change.
There are many other reasons to fast, but mainly, these are the reasons God calls us—His people—to fast in the hope of finding, healing, and growing!
The first reason many people start fasting is to get clear about something. We need answers or guidance from God. Prayer does not always provide the answers we need. Fasting is a way to go down in our search for God.

It makes my heart happy to know that the heroes of my faith were not always happy with God’s answer. Well, not that they were unhappy, but that they poured out their hearts to God and He answered them.
If we look at fasting according to the Bible, we see a lack of grace! God is not about giving us clarity or helping us understand and change where necessary. The reward for fasting in the Bible has always been a kind of enlightenment.
Am I the only one who has to change my heart to accept God’s will at times? Can I have an Amen?!?!
If there is something difficult or painful or sad that is too much for you to deal with or solve on your own, a time of fasting can be powerful. Crying or grief over a serious problem often led people in the Bible to fast. The power of fasting and prayer to heal wounds is seen in the Scriptures!

This song gives me hope because the people of Israel were in a season of blessing. They had just been released from prison! Hope had to flow from them, but it was difficult. Sometimes hard times come in the midst of blessings.
Nehemiah humbled himself by fasting and found grace from God to return and fulfill God’s plan with his people.
Sometimes we are in a dry season. Hardness comes without warning and is hard to shake. Sometimes we are hard and we don’t even know it. Sometimes we need a new filling of the Holy Spirit when we go to serve you in some way. However, fasting cures the hardness of the soul in cold ways.
Why do we fast and worship the Scriptures? Because Jesus showed us a strong example of this! I love Jesus’ promise to fill those who are hungry for him.
Best Prayers For Fasting The Holy Mess
Jehovah will guide you always, he will satisfy your soul in the burnt places, and strengthen your bones; And it will be like a watered field, and like a well of water that does not give water.” Isaiah 58:11
Sometimes we are faced with bad situations. If there’s something pressing that you can’t shake, a time of fasting can bring peace and healing.
The final reason for fasting may seem obvious, but it must be said that sin has consequences. The result of sin we rarely notice is spiritual dryness and unanswered prayers. When you are struggling to free yourself from sin, fasting is powerful. The power of prayer and fasting cannot be overstated!
As a side note, fasting often brings out areas of sin that we didn’t know we had. Whether you want to deal with the problem of sin or not, God often wants to deal with the problem of sin in us. So watch out for that.
The Reward Of Fasting In Islam
Can you relate to one of the Old and New Testament biblical reasons for fasting? Are there things in your life that you need God’s intervention about?
Fasting is a weapon in our spiritual arsenal that can be used against the real enemy. When you fast, you draw closer to God to seek God to guide you and intervene in your life.

Refusal to fast is a powerful spiritual discipline. Through fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit can change your life. And the practice of fasting came from the Bible. Jesus himself spent time fasting and praying in his life on earth and he expected his disciples to fast as well. In most cases, fasting is when you abstain from food or a certain type of food for a certain period of time. However, there are many ways to fast, all of which have the potential to help you grow spiritually.
It is important to make sure that you are paying attention to both the Holy Spirit and your own body in your fasting. Instead of stopping eating altogether, you can post from some type of food or something other than food, like social media. You can choose to post until a certain time of the day or skip a certain meal. There are many ways to make sure you get the physical food you need while still enjoying the spiritual food and fasting and prayer offered.
Fasting and prayer can also bring about more than personal change. When God’s people practice fasting and praying, God hears from heaven and can heal our lives, our churches, our communities, our countries, and our country. Fasting and prayer can even bring revival—a change of course.
